The share of workers that derive the main source of their income from gig work is rapidly increasing. This new way of working offers gig workers increased flexibility and convenience; however, they are also largely unprotected from risks such as illness, disability and income loss. To meet the needs of this growing section of the labour force and reduce coverage gaps, insurers will need to innovate across key links of the value chain and pursue partnerships with platforms and policymakers.
